Fed Cup: Romania 2 Canada 0 after the first day

Romania leads Canada 2-0 in the Fed Cup after the first matches on Saturday of the meeting that takes place in the Polyvalent Hall of Cluj-Napoca, in the first round of the World Group II. In the first encounter, Romanian tennis player Sorana Cîrstea (27, 38th WTA – photo) has defeated Carol Zhao (138th WTA) 6-2, 6-2.

Sorana Cârstea managed 2 aces, compared to only one of the Canadian player, with 65% wins on the first service as compared to 58% for Zhao. In the chances of break, the Romanian player won 5 out of 7, while Carol Zhao only 1 out of 4.

Simona Halep, 2nd WTA, watched the matches from the stand. The best Romanian player cannot play against Canada due to an injury suffered at the Australian Open.

In the second singles match of the day, Irina Begu (27, 37th WTA) has defeated the Canadian player of Romanian origin Bianca Andreescu (17, 173rd WTA) 6-3, 6-7, 6-2.

On Sunday, at 12.00h: Begu vs. Zhao, followed by Cîrstea vs, Andreescu. In the doubles match Ana Bogdan/Raluca Olaru vs. Katherina Sebov/Gabriela Dabrowski.
