Romanian fencer Simona Gherman won the gold medal in the women’s epee individual event of the European Fencing Championships in Torun, Poland, after defeating on Wednesday Ana Maria Popescu (Branza) 9-5.
Simona Gherman successively defeated French Josephine Coquin (13-12), Estonians Irina Embrich (15-11) and Julia Beljajeva (15-12), German Monika Sozanska (13-10) in the quarter-finals, and Polish Renata Knapik-Miazga (15-12) in the semi-finals.
Ana Maria Popescu defeated Aleksandra Zamachowska (15-13), Estonian Kristina Kuusk (15-7), Ukrainian Yana Shemyakina (15-9), Simona Pop (15-9) in the quarter-finals and Hungarian Emese Szasz (13-12) in the semi-finals.
Gherman, 31, has won her second European title in women’s epee individual, after 2012 title, as well as her 7th medal in the European Championships.
