Ana Maria Popescu (Branza) has won the gold medal in the individual women’s epee event at FIE Women’s Epee World Cup in Nanjing, China, after defeating Tunisia’s Sara Besbes, 15-10, in the final.
Ana Maria Popescu, of CSA Steaua, defeated Julia Beljajeva (Estonia), 15-3; Tatiana Andryushina (Russia), 15-3; Marie Florence Candassamy (France) in the second round; Emese Szasz (Hungary), 11-10 in the quarter-finals and Irina Embrich (Estonia), 15-11 in the semi-finals, Agerpres informs.
Romania’s other female epee fencers having competed at Nanjing came up as follows: Loredana Dinu — 20th; Simona Pop — 59th ; Anca Maroiu — 70th, and Amalia Tataran — 75th.
On Sunday, Romania will compete in the team event in Nanjing. The Romanian women’s epee team is coached by Dan Podeanu and George Epurescu.
