Former Football Federation President Mircea Sandu prosecuted by DNA for bribe taking

Former President of the Romanian Football Federation (FRF) Mircea Sandu is prosecuted by the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA), in the file being prosecuted also his wife, Elisabeta.

DNA prosecutors argue that Mircea Sandu received bribe amounting to RON 724,000 (approx. EUR 150,000) on October 2, 2009, ziare.com reports.

“On October 2, 2009, defendant Sandu Mircea, as FRF President, with the support of his wife Sandu Elisabeta, received as bribe the amount of RON 724,000 from two natural persons, one being representative of a law firm. The money was received by the defendant so that FRF concludes with the law firm two contracts for legal assistance, completed by signing the two documents on October 20, 2009. Based on these documents, the law firm collected from FRF the amount of RON 11,705,626. Criminal seizure was established in the file on real estate belonging to the two defendants. The file has been sent to the Bucharest Court with the proposal to maintain the precautionary measures in this case,” the DNA release reads.

Mircea Sandu withdrew from football in 2014, not wanting to run for another term of FRF President.

The new President, Razvan Burleanu, has ordered audit and signaled several issues to the authorities.
