Gymnastics: Catalina Ponor wins two gold medals at Baku’s World Cup competition

Romanian woman gymnast Catalina Ponor has won on Sunday two gold medals in balance beam and floor events, at the World Cup competition in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The triple Olympic champion of Athens (2004) won the floor event with a mark of 13.433, ahead of Australian Emily Little, 13.400 and Azeri Marina Nekrasova marked with 12.833.

In the balance beam event, Ponor won the first place in the finals with 13.833, being followed in the standings by Greek Vasiliki Miloussi – 13.633 and Emily Little – 13.433.

Catalina Ponor qualified to the finals with the highest scores, 13.233 in the floor event, and 14.233 in the balance beam.

Ponor, 29, wrote on her Facebook page: “The first competition this year is over, the first medals have arrived. A good start, it couldn’t have been better! Tomorrow we start ahead towards the next competition in Doha! It is the last check before the European Championship in Cluj! I hope I’ll get a result as good as this one!”

Catalina Ponor will turn 30 this year. She will compete during April 19-23 in the European Championship in Cluj Napoca.
