Madrid Open: Irina Begu defeats Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets to reach second round

Romanian tennis player Irina Camelia Begu (27, 36th WTA) defeated Jelena Ostapenko (Latvia, 5th seeded) 6-3, 6-3 on Saturday, in the first round of the Madrid Open.

The match lasted one hour and 24 minutes.

Begu had 4 aces and 8 winners, but also 10 unforced errors, whereas Ostapenko had 24 winners and 39 unforced errors.

Following this victory, Irina Begu will collect 65 WTA points and a cheque of EUR 36,770. In the second round Begu will face the winner of the match between Mihaela Buzarnescu and Maria Sharapova.

Simona Halep (1st WTA) will play on Sunday against Ekaterina Makarova (Russia) and Sorana Cirstea will face Katerina Siniakova (Czech Republic).

In the doubles, Simona Halep will pair with Irina Begu and will face the pair Nicole Melichar (US)/Kveta Peschke (Czech Republic), recent winners at Prague Open.
