Romania’s 8+1 women’s rowing team won the gold medal at the Paris Olympics. The men’s 8+1 team finished the race in 5th place.
The Romanian 8+1 rowers won the race outright with a time of 5:54:39. The Romanian athletes took the race on their own after passing 500 meters, a control point that Canada passed with a slight advantage. Incidentally, Canada won the silver medal. The bronze medals went to Great Britain.
The team consists of Maria Magdalena Rusu, Roxana Anghel, Ancuța Bodnar, Maria Lehaci, Adriana Adam, Amalia Bereş, Ioana Vrînceanu, Simona Radiş, Victoria Ştefania Petreanu.
It is the first time in the last 20 years that the world champion also wins Olympic gold. The record was also set by Romania, according to digisport.ro.
So far, the Romanian delegation has won 4 medals in the rowing competitions in Paris, one gold and 3 silver.
It is Romania’s third gold medal at this edition of the Olympic Games, after those won by David Popovici (swimming / 200m freestyle) and by Marian Enache and Andrei Cornea (rowing / men’s double sculls).
