Nicu Vlad takes over as interim COSR head until elections

Nicu Vlad, the chairman of the Romanian Weightlifting Federation and Vice-president of the Romanian Olympic Committee (COSR) has taken over the position of CORS chairman, following Alin Petrache’s resignation at the end of Rio Olympics.

Nicu Vlad, Olympic champion in Los Angeles in 1984, will lead COSR until November 15, when elections are expected to elect the new head of the Olympic committee.

“According to the COSR statute, following the resignation of Chairman Alin Petrache, the three Vice-presidents are to manage the committee, including myself, until the elections for the office. Actually, the interim leadership will be implemented by the Executive Committee. Until the elections expected by November 15, the interim leadership will be implemented by the Executive Committee and I was named to lead the Executive Committee. You can call my office in any way you like, interim chairman, I don’t know if this is really important. It doesn’t mean I will make certain decisions, the decisions are to be made by the Executive Committee,” Nicu Vlad said, quoted by ProSport.

Alin Petrache was elected to lead COSR in 2014 for a two-year term, so his mandate would have concluded anyway after the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Romania has registered in Rio the poorest sporting results.

The former head of the Romanian Olympic and Sport Committee, Alin Petrache, resigned from office on September 29 for not observing the target at the Rio Olympic Games. Petrache also announced he would not run anymore for the committee’s elections this autumn.
