Victorious in the 200 m freestyle event in Barcelona, David Popovici qualified for the final of the 100 m freestyle event with the fifth time of the series (49.20s).
Former European and world champion, the Romanian swimmer stopped the timer at 48.49 seconds (his best time in this event is 46.86, former world record). Popovici defeated the South Korean Sunwoo Hwang (48.51) and the Japanese Katsuhiro Matsumoto (48.79) in the final.
Romania has two swimmers qualified for the Olympic Games in Paris: David Popovici and Vlad Stancu.
