Romanian tycoon Ion Țiriac today awarded the 16 Romanian athletes who won medals at the Olympic Games in Paris. The reward: Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric cars, which cost around 50,000 euros.
Those who obtained two medals received two cars each. Gymnast Sabrina Voinea was also awarded, although she finished 4th, Golazo.ro reports.
Apart from the cars, Țiriac also gave the athletes a special medal, made of 14k gold, as well as life insurance from one of his companies specialized in the field.
“You deserve it, because you worked 4 years for that second, for that millimeter, Mr. Popovici. It’s a big deal to work like a slave to do your job. I hope we have a pretty bright future,” the businessman told swimmer David Popovici.
Țiriac also insisted on the need for the Romanian state to continue supporting sports: “I had the honor and the pleasure of seeing the Prime Minister yesterday and he promised us that what he said he would do. I mean infrastructure, money for sports. I think he will.”
Overall there were 22 cars, which means an effort of almost one million euros, made by the Țiriac family through the Țiriac Foundation.
