Simona Halep will not compete in the Tokyo tournament due to injury

Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, 5th WTA, has announced that she has decided not to compete in the tournament in Tokyo this year due to an injury to her left leg.

“I am unfortunately not able to play at this year’s Toray Pan Pacific Open due to a hamstring injury in my left leg,” Halep said in a statement. “I’ve always enjoyed playing in front of my fans in Tokyo and hope to be back there very soon.”

Halep was the third favourite in Japan.

In these conditions, Simona will compete this year in Wuhan and Beijing tournaments and to the Singapore champions’ tournament, the last one depending on the number of points she will collect until the end of the season.

Simona will continue her recovery in the country at the Ion Tiriac sports complex in Bucharest.

Halep reached the quarterfinals of the US Open, falling to top seed Serena Williams in three gruelling sets.

Accepting a wildcard into the main draw is Petra Kvitova, who is coming off of a successful run in Flushing where she reached the fourth round to play eventual champion Angelique Kerber, wtatennis.com commented.
