Sorana Cîrstea, announcement about retirement

Sorana Cîrstea has announced her presence at the Transylvania Open tennis tournament to be held in February, and this may be her last participation in a tournament on Romanian territory, as she is considering retiring next year, GOLAZO.ro reports.

“I am very excited to return to Cluj for @transylvaniaopen in February 2025, possibly for a last appearance in front of the Romanian public,” Sorana Cîrstea wrote in a message published on Instagram.

She emphasizes that the 2025 season may be her last year on the professional circuit.The 2025 season may be my last WTA season. I say possibly because we never know what the future holds. That is why I really wanted to participate in a tournament in Romania and I am happy to be back on the court,” said Sorana Cîrstea.

Aged 34,  Sorana Cîrstea has not played for half a year due to an injury that led to surgery.

Sorana Cîrstea’s last official match was at Wimbledon, where she lost in three sets to English player Sonay Kartal, 6-3, 2-6, 0-6. Sorana Cîrstea has won two WTA tournaments throughout her career, and her best ranking was 21st in the WTA. In 2013, at the Toronto tournament, Sorana Cîrstea defeated 3 players from the Top 10 WTA before losing in the final to Serena Williams.
