Tennis: Ana Bogdan defeats main favourite of Taipei tournament

Romanian tennis player Ana Bogdan has qualified on Tuesday to the last sixteen round of the WTA tournament in Taipei, with a total prizes of USD 226,750, after defeating the main favourite, Chinese Shuai Peng, 6- 4, 6-1.

Ana Bogdan, 25, who entered in top 100 for the first time on Monday (89th WTA), has won in an hour and 14 minutes in front of an experienced opponent (32 years), who is the 31st in WTA rankings.

Bogdan had 5 aces, but she also made three double mistakes, while Peng had 2 aces and made four double mistakes.

After the match, Ana Bogdan has told ziare.com: “I felt good on the court, I was confident and it paid results. I’ve watched Shuai before the match and it did not matter she was the favourite. At this level, one can meet a favourite at any time, so I focus on my game according to the strategy. Lately, I’ve been very calm on the court and it surely paid results.”

Ana Bogdan will receive a cheque of USD 3,400 and 30 WTA points, and in the next round she will face Eugenie Bouchard (Canada), who benefited from the retirement of Lin Zhu (China) at the score of 1-6, 7-5, 2-0.

On Monday, Monica Niculescu qualified in to the last sixteen round in Taipei as opponent Ons Jabeur (Tunisia) abandoned due to injury at the score of  6-1, 4-0 for Niculescu and will play in the second round against Zarina Dias (Kazakhstan, 6th seeded).
