The Romanian Tennis Federation (FRT) has decided to name former tennis player Ilie Nastase as the new non-playing-captain of the Fed Cup team.
“This decision comes as part of the new FRT plan to bring the values of Romanian tennis to this team, a team with great chances to go back to the World Group and even to win the Fed Cup. Alina Cercel-Tecsor remains with the team as head coach,” FRT announces, according to digi24.ro.
Simona Halep, Irina Begu, Monica Niculescu, Andreea Mitu and Raluca Olaru relegated from the World Group I after being defeated by the Czech Republic and Germany.
During February 11-12, 2017, Romania will face Belgium in World Group II in Bucharest.
Ilie Nastase was President of the FRT during 1997-2008. In 1994 Ilie Nastase was non-playing-captain for the Davis Cup team.
Former ATP leader, Ilie Nastase (70 y.o.) won two Grand Slam trophies (Roland Garros and US Open), four Champions Tournaments and played three Davis Cup finals (all lost).
