Tennis: Simona Halep advances to no. 2 in WTA rankings

Romanian Simona Halep has advanced one place and is, as of Monday, the second best tennis player in the world in the WTA rankings, at a significant difference from leader Serena Williams. Halep, 22, holding the best ranking of a Romanian in WTA, is at 2,365 points below the American and has a lead of 220 points from the holder of the third place, Chinese Na Li (who is injured). Simona Halep started the year at the 11th place the world rankings, on January 27 climbed to the 10th place, on February 17 to the 9th, and on February 24 equaled the best ranking of a Romanian in women’s hierarchy (WTA), the 7th place held by Irina Spirlea on October 13, 1997. On March 17, Halep advanced to the 5th place, and on May 19 she became the world’s no. four, and on June 9 she became no. 3 in WTA.
