Two Romanian athletes – robbed in Rio

Romanian athletes Paula Claudia Todoran and Elena Daniela Cîrlan have been robbed of a backpack with personal items on Tuesday in the beach-volley area at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the website of the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee (COSR) informs.

“On August 16, 2016, at around 14.00h (20.00h, Bucharest time), athletes Paula Claudia Todoran and Elena Daniela Cîrlan were in the beach-volley Olympic arena area and noted the lack of a backpack which contained personal items’”, the press release reads.

“They did not notice when the theft occurred and have not interacted in any way with the supposed/alleged perpetrator/perpetrators. They have immediately contacted a Rio 2016 volunteer; he has accompanied them to the nearest police station, where they filed a report. At the same time, they were able to contact the Romanian Athletic Federation of the Romanian Olympic Team,” the quoted source informs.

Head of Mission Alexandru Epuran went to the police station and safely transported the athletes to the Olympic Village and has obtained new accreditation for Paula Todoran. Both athletes are in the Olympic Village and are safe.

Todoran and Cîrlan competed in Sunday’s marathon, the first one finishing 101st whereas Cîrlan abandoned the race.
