UPDATE: Fed Cup – Romania vs. Germany in World Group qualification match to be played in Cluj on clay court

The Romanian women’s tennis team will play at home against Germany in Fed Cup World Group qualification match, in order to remain in the group, according to the draw in London last Tuesday.

The matches will take place on April 16-17, also in Cluj Napoca, as the match against Czech Republic this month. The tennis federation (FRT) officials decided on Thursday to use the same venue, although the arena will be turned into a clay court.

“The match against Czech Republic in Cluj Napoca was very well organized, it was a great atmosphere, and the players enjoyed it. We decided to go back there for such an important match. The non-playing coach Alina Tecsor has agreed together with the players to play in the Polyvalent Hall in Cluj, this time on clay,” FRT President George Cosac said, according to ziare.com.

Germany lost at home the match in the quarter-finals against Switzerland 2-3. Romania lost at home against Czech Republic 2-3.

Right after the draw, Germany’s non-playing captain Barbara Rittner said she is disappointed, ziare.com reports. “It is a very difficult draw and, unfortunately, we play away. We play Against Simona Halep, Irina Begu and Monica Niculescu. Romania’s team is one of the top. We have a difficult mission,” Rittner said for Spiegel.
