Romanian tennis player Monica Niculescu (photo 1) qualified to the second round of the US Open, defeating in two sets, 6-3, 6-2, the French player Kristina Mladenovic.
The match, interrupted Tuesday night due to the rain with the score 6-3, 1-1 in Niculescu’s favour, was resumed on Wednesday, the Romanian defeating the 14th seeded after one hour and 51 minutes.
Ana Bogdan (photo 2) also qualified on Wednesday in the second round after defeating American Taylor Townsend 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
Ana Bogdan (24, 108th WTA) won in two hours and 18 minutes against the American (21, 119th WTA), a wildcard beneficiary.
The Romanian players secured a cheque for USD 86,000 and 70 WTA points, and in the next round will face each other.
