Weightlifting: Romania – 23 medals, as Nicolae Onica wins two more

Romanian athlete Nicolae Onica has won on Saturday two gold medals in the 94 kg category (clean and jerk, and total) at the European Weightlifting Championships in Izvorani, near Bucharest.

Onica secured a gold medal in the clean and jerk event – 204 kg. He failed at clean and jerk 210 kg, but managed to lift the same weight on his third attempt. Onica won the silver medal in the snatch event. Nicolae Onica was first also in total, winning the gold (381 kg).

Overall, Romania has won 23 medals so far. Elena Andries won three gold medals (snatch, clean and jerk, total), Ilie Ciotoiu won two bronze medals (clean and jerk, total), Ionut Ilie secured two bronze medals (clean and jerk, total), Andreei Penciu won a silver medal (snatch) and a bronze medal (total), Maria Grigoriu got one bronze (clean and jerk), Paul Dumitrascu won silver medal (clean and jerk), Loredana Toma – three golds (snatch, clean and jerk, total), Irina Lepsa – silver (snatch, clean and jerk), Razvan Martin – gold (snatch) and two silver medals (clean and jerk, total), Nicolae Onica – two gold medals (clean and jerk, total) and one silver (snatch).

The European Senior Weightlifting Championships started on March 26 and end on April 1 at the Izvorani Olympic Complex.
