Weightlifting: Seven medals for Romania at the European Championship

Ionuţ Ilie has won the bronze medals on Tuesday in the jerk style (154 kg) and total (283 kg) in the 62 kg category at the European Weightlifting Championships in Izvorani, near Bucharest.

Ilie lifted 145, 152 and 154 kilograms in jerk. In this style, the gold medal was won by Sota Mishvelidze (Georgia), 165 kg, and the silver medal by Stilyan Grozdev (Bulgaria), with 158 kg.

Ilie, 25, says he even thinks about a participation in the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. “Let’s see how I get back from an injury.” There is no question of surgery, I hope I will be OK at the World Championship. There’s still a long time until the Olympic Games in Tokyo. I want to get there, and that’s why I need a lot of work, I think I will go up another category, I do not know yet,” Iulian Ilie said.

After two days of competition, Romania already has seven medals at the EC.

On Monday, Elena Andrieş won three gold medals (snatch, jerk and total) in the 48 kg category, and Ilie Ciotoiu two bronze medals (jerk and total) in the 56 kg category.

Elena Ramona Andrieş set a total of 179 kg, with 79 kg in snatch and 100 kg in jerk.

Andries (23) was third in the European Championship last year in Split, Croatia.

The European Championships are taking place during March 26-April 1 in Izvorani. Romania had hosted European seniors Championships in 1972, in Constanta, and in 2009 in Bucharest.
