Competition Council investigates travel agencies suspected of cartel

The Competition Council (CC) has opened the first investigation as a result of information received through an anonymous complaint registered on the platform of competition whistleblowers. This investigation focuses on the possible violation of competition rules on the tourism trading market of products and/or travel packages by travel agencies, the Competition Council informs.

The Competition Council suspects that travel agencies are coordinating their trade policies in order to impose a minimum selling price of the tourism products and/or travel packages and for maintaining a status quo on the market since 2013.

During the investigation, the Competition Council has conducted unannounced inspections at the premises and/or points at the work of several companies operating on the market of tourist services.

The documents seized during these inspections are analyzed by the Romanian competition authority, under specific procedures investigation.

Unannounced inspections are a preliminary step in the investigation procedures of a possible anticompetitive behaviour. Carrying out these inspections is not an ante-pronouncing by the Competition Council regarding the companies investigated, nor regarding the final outcome of the investigation.

The competition whistleblower’s platform is a tool that ensures the anonymity of people who want to communicate to the Competition Council information regarding collusive activities by companies.
