The crisis which started with “a recession” in 2008-2009 has not ended, not even today, even though the Romanian economy “rushes with the highest speed in Europe”, Romania is still in transition, Adrian Vasilescu, advisor for strategy with the National Bank of Romania (BNR) stated on Wednesday in a press conference on the 10th anniversary since Romania’s EU integration..
“For us, it’s not starting a booming phase. This is Romania, doomed to be always in transition,” central bank official stressed.
According to him, Romania ranked 6th in the EU during 2011-2012, the country reaching the first place when it comes to speed of economic growth. “We drive with the highest speed in Europe, but the basis on which we rely is not as robust,” Vasilescu said.
He showed that Romania, although it is the first EU country in terms of economic growth and the seventh largest economy in the EU, ranks the penultimate in purchasing power parity.
Governor advisor for strategy reminded that the bases of Romania’s accession to the EU were made in 2000 during the Isarescu government, when the premier at the time persuaded the EC president, Romano Prodi, on the need for Romania to join the EU on January 1, 2007.
Subsequently, the economic development strategy on medium term has been developed.
