European Commission to finance new subway connection Bucharest-Otopeni Airport, Transport Minister says

Transport Minister Felix Stroe has announced on Thursday, at the beginning of the Government sitting, that the request for funding of the M6 subway line to the International Airport Henri Coanda has been accepted by the European Commission. The project’s overall value is EUR 1.391 billion.

The difference of EUR 300 million to complete the M6 subway line will be provided by EBRD, Stroe added.

“It is a very serious international financial institution – the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. It’s good news. Thus, the M6 subway connection has all the funding needed and is on the right track, the project can’t be stopped,” Minister Felix Stroe said.

The Ministry of Transport approved and submitted to the European Commission, on December 24, the Application for funding the major project ‘The connection of the subway network to Henri Coanda – Otopeni International Airport (Connection 6, Mai  1 – Otopeni).

The subject of the funding request is to ensure a direct connection between Bucharest and Otopeni, respectively between Bucharest, Gara de Nord (North Railway Station) and Henri Coanda International Airport, by building a new subway line with a length of 14.2 km and 12 subway stations. The total project value is EUR 1,391,634,272.

The Connection 6 (M6) is currently under designing and the environment agreement was issued in October 2017.
