Three Romanian regions have a GDP per capita below 50 pc of the EU average

In 2015, regional GDP per capita, expressed in terms of purchasing power standards, ranged from slightly less than 30 percent of the European Union (EU) average in the Bulgarian region of Severozapaden, to 580 percent of the average in Inner London – West in the United Kingdom.

According to Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, there are 19 regions with GDP per capita below 50 percent of the EU average: five were in Bulgaria, four each in Hungary and Poland, three in Romania, two in Greece and one in France.

As regards Romanian regions, it’s about Northeast – 34 percent, South-West Oltenia – 40 percent, South-Muntenia – 47 percent.

The leading regions in the ranking of regional GDP per capita in 2015, after Inner London – West in the United Kingdom (580 percent of the average), were the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (264 percent), Hamburg in Germany (206 percent), Brussels in Belgium (205 percent) and Bratislava in Slovakia (188 percent).

There were 20 regions with GDP per capita 50 percent or more above the EU average in 2015: five were in Germany, four in the United Kingdom, two each in the Netherlands and Austria, one each in Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Slovakia and Sweden, as well as the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

Bucharest-Ilfov was the best placed region in Romania with a GDP per capita of 136 percent compared to the EU average.
