Cheile Turzii and Cheile Turenilor reservations, revamped with European funds

Cheile Turzii (photo) and Cheile Turenilor, two natural reservations in Cluj, ditched for decades, will be revamped with European funds. They will have managers, same as the US reservations, tourists will not wander freely through the area and car access will be forbidden. According to the project management, these latest measures are most welcomed, especially since eight species of plants and reptiles and dozens of otters came to extinction in this region during the past 20 years.

The authorities from Cluj-Napoca spend RON 1 million (EUR 225,123) in 30 months in order to put in place an action plan for the restoration of two of the most important reservations in Romania. Destroyed by tourists over the last 20 years, they will be provided with the management model of the national parks in the United States.

As part of the European project, an IT system was developed showing through impact maps how the reservations get destroyed if extreme sports and tourism will go on over there.
