Corvin Castle, also known as Hunyadi Castle or Hunedoara Castle, the most famous medieval construction in Romania, is facing big challenges this year. After scoring a record number of visitors in 2015 – 300,000, the Gothic-Renaissance citadel keeps reinventing itself in the upcoming period: it will undergo a EUR 10m facelift with EU money and it will host several shootings for movies and documentaries. The revamping works will last 2 years.
“The castle will be fully restored, the rooms, the halls will be equipped with furniture, arms and armors. There will be visiting tours available for tourists, while the area round the castle will be put into service again. Ridings will be held there, an amphitheater will be set up to host shows. It’s a very ambitious project,” Dan Bera, the castle’s administrator said.
He also unveiled that an American action feature film will be shot at the castle’s venue.
In February 2007, Corvin Castle played host to the British paranormal television program Most Haunted Live! for a three-night live investigation into the spirits reported to be haunting the castle. Results were inconclusive.
In 2013, the television show Ghost Adventures shot an episode at the castle as part of their Halloween special sequence.
Corvin or Hunyadi Castle is one of the largest ones in Europe, while also ranking among Romania’s top seven wonders. Experts also consider Corvin Castle as the best-preserved medieval monument in southeastern Europe.
The citadel was built in 1446 by order of Iancu of Hunedoara (John Hunyadi), turning into a large and imposing building with tall and diversely coloured roofs, towers and myriad windows and balconies adorned with stone carvings.
