Cruises brought a record number of tourists in Constanta port this year – 65,000

Most visitors who stepped on Romanian land are American citizens, followed by Frenchmen, Italians and Germans.

It seems that 2014 was a very good year in terms of tourism. The unfavorable political context in Ukraine became favorable for Romania. More cruise voyages have decided to replace from their itinerary the port of Odessa to Constanta harbour.

Thus, over 65,000 tourists arrived in Constanta Port this year by impressive cruise ships, the number of tourists increased by 20 percent every year from 2008, local media reports, quoting National Tourism Authority. Each tourist has spent EUR 100 on average in Constanta, hence tourists arriving by cruise ships spent this year, more than EUR 650,000 to the Black Sea.

MSC Orchestra was the latest vessel docked in eastern Romanian port. Impressive in size, the ship disembarked Sunday with about 2,400 passengers who paid to stay between EUR 700 and EUR 2,500, depending on quality and duration of leave. Craft number will increase to 70,000 in the next month, given that cruises season ends on November 15.

According to the National Tourism Authority, most tourists who stepped on Romanian land are American citizens, closely followed by Frenchmen, Italians and Germans. The favorite destinations of those arriving in Constanta via cruise ships are the Danube Delta, Bucharest, Histria Citadel or Murfatlar wine cellar.

Many of them showed themselves pleased as the city looks and they promised to return in the near future.

Since the cruises season was opened on April 1, a record of 92 cruise ships around the world accosted in the new passenger terminal of the Harbour of Constanta, exceeding the reference year 2008, when were recorded 80 stops and 30,000 visitors.

For next year, Maritime Ports Administration representatives are planning to expand the existing tourist terminal with a new building, so that the number of passenger ships arriving in Romania to grow significantly.
