European visitors, Romania’s most consistent tourists

However, the average time of their stay remains too short – almost two days.

In the first nine months of 2014, compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, both the arrivals and the overnight stays in the establishments of tourists’ reception with functions of tourists’ accommodation increased by 6.1 percent and by 5.7 percent, respectively, National Institute of Statistics data reveal.
Compared to the same month of the previous year, the arrivals and the overnight stays in the establishments of tourists’ reception with functions of tourists’ accommodation increased by 10.8 percent (825.7 thousand) and by 5.4 percent, respectively in September 2014.
Compared to September 2013, in September 2014, customs registered an increase in both the arrivals of foreign visitors of 7.7 percent and in the departures abroad of the Romanian visitors of 14.5 percent.
The same data show that in September, the arrivals of the Romanian tourists in the establishments of tourists’ reception with functions of tourists’ accommodation were 74.4 percent of the total arrivals, while the foreign tourists were 25.6 percent, weights close to those of September 2013. As to the arrivals of the foreign tourists in the establishments of tourists’ reception, the highest weight had those coming from Europe (76.7 percent of the total of foreign tourists) and 87.2 percent of them came from European Union Member States.
In September 2014, the arrivals in hotels had a weight of 76.9 percent of the total arrivals in the establishments of tourists’ reception with functions of tourists’ accommodation. Compared to September 2013, the arrivals in hotels increased by 11 percent in September 2014. In September 2014, the overnight stays in the establishments of tourists’ reception amounted to 2005.2 thousand, 5.4 percent more compared to September 2013. In September 2014, the Romanian tourists’ overnight stays in the establishments of tourists’ reception with functions of tourists’ accommodation were 79.7 percent of the total overnight stays, while the foreign tourists’ overnight stays were 20.3 percent. As to the overnight stays in the establishments of tourists’ reception, the highest weight had those coming from Europe (75.8 percent of the total of foreign tourists) and 86.7 percent of them came from European Union Member States.
This September, the average time of stay was 2.6 days for Romanian tourists, while for the foreign tourists it was 1.9 days. In the ninth month of the year, the net use index of accommodation places was 29.1 percent on total tourists’ accommodation, 0.4 pp more compared to September 2013.
Higher indices of accommodation places were registered by hotels (36.7 percent), tourist villas (19 percent), hostels (18.9 percent) and tourist boarding-houses (16.6 percent).
Most of the foreign visitors came from European countries (91.4 percent). 56.8 percent of the total arrivals of the foreign visitors to Romania were from European Union Member States, out of which the most arrivals were from Hungary (27.6 percent), Bulgaria (24.8 percent), Germany (9.7 percent), Poland (6.9 percent), Italy (6.7 percent) and Austria (3.3 percent). The most visited areas by foreigners were Bucharest and County capital cities (76,4 percent), mountain resorts (8.5 percent), Riviera resorts, Constanta city excluded (1.8 percent), Spa resorts (1.5 percent), Danube Delta Area, Tulcea city included (0.8 percent)
The departures of Romanian visitors abroad, according to customs, amounted to 1213.5 thousand, 14.5 percent more compared to September 2013. The Romanian visitors abroad mostly used the means of road transport, 77.9 percent of the total departures.
From the beginning of the year until September, the average time of stay was 2.6 days for Romanian tourists, while for the foreign tourists it was 2 days.
