Travel preferences can reveal a lot about individuals—and also about the generation they belong to. A recent survey* conducted by a travel-tech company explored how Romanians plan to travel in 2025, uncovering some key generational differences between Millennials and Gen Z.
Motivations for travel show both overlap and contrast. Relaxation ranks as the top reason for both generations, but it holds slightly more weight for Millennials (81.7%) than for Gen Z (71.4%). Next on the list for both groups is the desire to explore new destinations and experience different cultures—cited by 55.2% of Millennials and 52% of Gen Z.
In terms of travel frequency, most respondents from both generations plan at least one European trip in 2025—26% of Millennials and 28.6% of Gen Z. However, Gen Z appears more eager to travel often and farther: 20.7% aim to take 2–3 trips, including those outside of Europe, compared to 15.8% of Millennials.
Cost remains a major factor in destination selection across both groups. Flight prices and accommodation costs top their concerns. Interestingly, 25% of Millennials also consider family-friendly activities, a factor only 5% of Gen Z consider relevant. Meanwhile, Gen Z shows slightly more interest in nightlife, festivals, and sports—around 10%, versus 6% of Millennials.
Inflation and rising prices weigh on everyone’s minds. Booking early is a popular strategy for saving money: 49% of Gen Z and 53.3% of Millennials say they prefer to plan ahead. Still, 26.2% of Gen Z say inflation won’t affect their travel plans—they intend to enjoy themselves regardless. Only 19% of Millennials share that confidence.
Stress and travel disruptions also reveal generational nuances. More Millennials (27%) worry about flight cancellations and getting stranded in airports compared to 21.6% of Gen Z. Both groups, however, agree that finding affordable flights can be overwhelming.
When faced with unexpected changes, Gen Z tends to be more proactive: 35.2% say they always have a backup plan, such as alternative flights or transport options, compared to just 23.7% of Millennials. On the flip side, Millennials are more detail-oriented—48% say they meticulously monitor their plans and check emails for updates, versus 41% of Gen Z.

Emerging travel trends for 2025 further reflect generational differences. “Coolcationing”—escaping the summer heat by visiting cooler destinations—attracts 26% of Gen Z and 19% of Millennials. “Nocturnism,” which includes nighttime experiences like stargazing or chasing the northern lights, appeals to 30.4% of Gen Z, compared to 21.5% of Millennials.
Even packing habits vary: only 31.6% of Gen Z admit to overpacking clothes they never wear, while 42% of Millennials do.
While both generations share a strong passion for travel, their approaches reflect distinct values and lifestyles. Gen Z leans toward spontaneity and experience-driven adventures, while Millennials tend to be more family-oriented and budget-conscious.
