Picturesque Lake Belis, among the deepest in Romania

One of the most picturesque lakes in Romania is Lake Belis. Located 55 km from Cluj-Napoca, Lake Belis is among the deepest in the country, in some areas its depth exceeds 70 meters. The lake is surrounded by coniferous forests, with cold and very clean water, where you can fish, sit on the beach or go boating.

Beliş Lake – Fântânele belongs to the category of artificial reservoir lakes, being located at the confluence of the Gilăului Mountains (east), the Vlădeasa Mountains (west) and the The Bige Mountain (south), Cluj county. It has an area of 9.8 square km and a length of 13 km, being located at an altitude of 990 m. The main purpose of the development is the production of electricity, this dam ensuring the necessary flow for the Mărişel hydroelectric plant.

Between the years 1970 – 1974, the villages located on the Someşului Cald valley were displaced, people being forced to leave their households.  Villages, such as Milioan, Pleș, Dădești, Bolojești or Giurcuța de Jos, are now a memory and only in very dry summers, when the water level of the lake drops a lot in dry summers, you can see the ruins of the houses abandoned by the locals, the most famous being the ruins of the former church from Giurcuța de Jos.

Currently, the Beliș-Fântânele tourist resort is located on the shore of the lake.
