Romania, among the top five travel destinations for UK holidaymakers, research reveals

Romania, Croatia and Lithuania are among the top five travel destinations preferred by British tourists, who are getting more and more attracted by the Eastern European and Baltic countries, reveals a Visa Europe survey published by travelweekly.co.uk on Monday.

The research was carried out by the agency Forward Thinking, which collected data on debit card use at point of sale or at ATMs overseas as compared with travel money picked up at bureau de change before departure.

The survey also reads that spend by UK cardholders in Romania, Lithuania and Croatia increased by 80%, 61% and 57% respectively between 2012 and 2014.

Croatia sees the largest amount of holiday spend in Eastern Europe by Brits currently, with £18.4 million spent on Visa cards during the summer of 2014. Romania ranked second (£8.8 million) and Lithuania third (£6.3 million).
