Google launched Street View panoramic photos in Turda salt mine on Google Maps, enabling anyone to virtually visit the sight.
“It’s the first underground entrance in Romania for Google Street View, the service is particularly useful to those thousands kilometers away who can visit now the sight. This year is special to us for we celebrate five years of Google Maps in Romania,” Dan Bulucea, Country Manager Google Romania told a press conference.
In her turn, the salt mine’s manager Simona Baciu said the HD images were recorded for two days in May.
“Our presence on Google Street View means the virtual launching of the salt mine. We talk about an extended visibility worldwide, expecting a rise in the number of tourists. I hope this will help us celebrate the tourist number 500,000 in 2015, after registering 470,000 visitor last year,” Baciu also said.
Turda salt mine ranks 5 in the top ten of travel destinations in Romania on Google Maps.
Turda salt mine’s exploitation dates back in the Roman time. It was closed down in 1932 and re-opened to the visitors and to the patients facing respiratory diseases in 1992, registering about 2.7 million tourists since then.
The salt mine underwent a ‘facelift’ process during 2008-2010 following a EUR 6 M investment.
