Former Bulgarian Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev was re-elected as President of the Party of the European Socialists (PES) on Friday, novinite.com informs.
Stanishev, who will serve as leader for another term of two and half years, was reelected at the tenth congress of the party, which is taking place in Budapest. His team of Vice Presidents and Secretary General will be appointed before the end of the congress on Saturday. Following his victory, Stanishev said that he was honoured and humbled to have been reelected to another term.
The re-elected leader pointed to the hard work in front of him in developing socialism and social democracy in Europe, but demonstrated readiness to face the challenge. Stanishev expressed his gratitude to all delegates, member parties and organisations for having reconfirmed their confidence in him, which motivated him to do more and really change Europe. He reaffirmed the purpose of PES as being to change the world for the better, ensure a dignified life for every individual and achieve a fair and coherent society.
Stanishev set out as his main goal to gain people’s trust and win the European Parliament elections in 2019. The only other candidate for the position, the member of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party and former President of the European Parliament Enrique Baron Crespo, decided not to run for president.
