Green car sales grew by 62.4 percent in the first three months of 2018, compared to the same period in the previous year, to 661 units, Automotive Manufacturers and Importers Association (APIA) data show.
Of this total, 201 are fully-electric cars, the equivalent of a jump of up to five times (+ 390.2 percent) compared to the first three months of 2017, and 460 units are hybrids (+ 25.7 percent).
During January-March 2018, the share of green cars in total sales at the national level was 2.2 percent, while in the same period of the previous year, the share was 1.7 percent.
In March, 269 electric and hybrid cars were sold, up by 35.17 percent, compared with the previous month, when 199 were sold.
Volkswagen was the top-selling electric carmaker in Romania in Q1 with 88 units, followed by smart (43), BMW (27), Mercedes Benz (14), Volvo (9), Renault (8), Porsche (4), Audi (3) and Kia (2). Also, most hybrid cars sold on domestic market in January – March 2018 were registered by Toyota (395 units), Lexus (25), Kia (15) and Audi (13).
APIA statistics show that last year the share of electric and hybrid cars in the total sales of new units reached 2.2 percent, their number reaching 2,811, up 136.7 percent compared to the previous year.
