The manufacturing of Dacia 1100 motor car began on May 11, 1968 and it was produced for three years, the last two along with another model, Dacia 1300 saloon. The first Dacia model assembled near Pitesti had rear thrust and rear engine, and the parts were supplied by Renault.
In 1966 the Romanian government launched a tender for the production of passenger cars with cylindrical capacity between 1000 and 1300 cc, several brands turned out for the auction – Fiat, Renault, Alfa Romeo, Peugeot and Austin. For economic reasons, Renault 8 won, which was to become Dacia 1100.
The factory near Pitesti was built in one year and a half.
The first Dacia 1100 motor car came out of the factory gates on August 20, 1968, and is currently in possession of the Romanian Automobile Club (ACR).
During the next three years 37,546 cars were produced with the selling price of 55,000 lei. In the same period, the plant produced some 100 units of Dacia 1100S, half of them for sports competitions and 50 for county police inspectorates.
At the time, production consisted in assembling and painting the car bodywork made in France, fitting in the French parts and testing the car before leaving the factory.
