Romanian tennis player Sorana Cîrstea (78th WTA) has qualified on Wednesday to the third round of Australian Open, after a surprise win 7-6 (1), 6-3 against Carla Suarez Navarro (Spain, 12th WTA) in one hour and 33 minutes. Cîrstea is the only Romanian women player still competing in the singles event in Melbourne.
In the third round, Cîrstea will face Alison Riske (US, 42nd WTA) who defeated Shuai Zhang cu 7-6 (7), 4-6, 6-1. Previous victories show 2-1victories for the Romanian player.
Irina Begu was defeated in the second round by Kristyna Pliskova (Czech Republic) 6-4, 7-6 (8). She is to collect 70 WTA points and AUD 80,000.
In the doubles, the pair Horia Tecau/Jean Julien Rojer, 9th seeded, have defeated Philipp Petzschner (Germany)/ Mikhail Youzhny (Russia) 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3) to qualify to the second round. Last year, tecau and Rojer have reached the quarter-finals in Melbourne.
Also in the doubles, Florin Mergea/Dominic Inglot defeated Luke Saville/Jordan Thompson (Australia) 6-2, 7-5 in one hour and 19 minutes.
