OMV Petrom invests EUR 16.8 million in Petrobrazi refinery overhaul and EUR 23.7 million in modernization projects, the management of the company announced. The process will begin on  May 25 and will last up to one month.

During the revision and modernization period, the workforce on the platform will increase by 3,200 people. Currently, up to 900 people are working in the refinery.

In this context, 1,900 pipelines will pass through the maintenance process and 1,300 safety valves will be checked.

Also, four smaller oil tanks, 10,000 cubic meters each, will be rehabilitated. The intervention facility in case of fire will be also modernized.

The revision and rehabilitation process of this year is a routine one, according to OMV Petrom representatives. All major facilities were modernized during 2010-2014, following EUR 600 million investments. The main focus of the most recent modernization program, finalized in 2014, was to increase the refinery’s competitiveness. With a refining capacity of 4.5 mn t/a, Petrobrazi can process the entire crude production of OMV Petrom in Romania.

Petrobrazi Refinery is one of the largest Romanian refineries and one of the largest in Eastern Europe, located in Ploieşti, Prahova County (South-East region of Romania), processing 90,000 barrels of crude oil daily.

It is connected to a complex pipeline infrastructure allowing the transportation of domestic crude oil from OMV Petrom’s oil fields and of imported crude oil from the Constanta Oil Terminal.

The history of Petrobrazi refinery began with the setting-up of Creditul Minier refinery in 1934, with a refining capacity of 300,000 t/a.

Almost completely destroyed in the Second World War, the refinery had been rebuilt and reconfigured throughout the years, reflecting market context and shareholders’ strategy.
