Arrivals in tourist establishments in Romania increased by 10.5% in 2023
Compared to December 2022, in December 2023 both arrivals and overnight stays in the establishments of tourists’ reception with functions of tourists’ accommodation, including apartments and rooms for rent, increased by 2.5%, respectively by 1.8%, says the latest report on tourism conducted by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
Compared to December 2022, in December 2023 customs registered an increase in the arrivals1 of foreign visitors of 10.6% and an increase of 15.3% in the departures1) abroad of the Romanian visitors.
In December 2023, the arrivals in the establishments of tourists’ reception (including apartments and rooms for rent) amounted to 901.1 thousand persons, increasing by 2.5% compared to December 2022.
In December 2023, the arrivals of the Romanian tourists in the establishments of tourists’ reception with functions of tourists’ accommodation were 84.5% of the total arrivals, while the foreign tourists were 15.5%.
In December 2023, the overnight stays in the establishments of tourists’ reception (including apartments and rooms for rent) amounted to 1735.4 thousand, increasing by 1.8% compared to December 2022.
In December 2023, the Romanian tourists’ overnight stays in the establishments of tourists’ reception with functions of tourists’ accommodation were 82.8% of the total overnight stays, while the foreign tourists’ overnight stays were 17.2%.
In December 2023, the average duration of stay was 1.9 days for Romanian and 2.1 days for foreign tourists.
In December 2023, the net use index of accommodation places was 24.8% on total tourists’ accommodation structures (including apartments and rooms for rent), decreasing by 0.4 percentage points compared to December 2022.
In December 2023, the arrivals of foreign visitors in Romania, according to customs, amounted to 1147.1 thousand persons, increasing by 10.6% compared to December 2022.
In December 2023, the departures of Romanian visitors abroad, according to customs, amounted to 1389.2 thousand persons, increasing by 15.3% compared to December 2022.
Overall, in 2023, the arrivals in the establishments of tourists’ reception (including apartments and rooms for rent) amounted to 13647.3 thousand persons, 10.5% more compared to 2022.
In 2023, the arrivals of the Romanian tourists in the establishments of tourists’ reception with functions of tourists’ accommodation were 84.6% of the total arrivals, while the foreign tourists were 15.4%.
In 2023, the overnight stays in the establishments of tourists’ reception (including apartments and rooms for rent) amounted to 29171.1 thousand, 9.8% more compared to 2022.
In 2023, the Romanian tourists’ overnight stays in the establishments of tourists’ reception with functions of tourists’ accommodation were 84.7% of the total overnight stays, while the foreign tourists’ overnight stays were 15.3%.
In 2023, the average duration of stay was 2.1 days for both Romanian and foreign tourists. In 2023, the net use index of accommodation places was 30.7% on total tourists’ accommodation structures (including apartments and rooms for rent), 1.3 percentage points more compared to 2022.
By county, the number of tourists’ arrivals in the establishments of tourists’ reception with functions of tourists’ accommodation (including apartments and rooms for rent) in 2023 recorded higher values in: Bucharest Municipality (1829.0 thousand persons), Constanța (1573.9 thousand persons), and Braşov (1513.5 thousand persons), while the number of tourists’ overnight stays in the establishments of tourists’ reception with functions of tourists’ accommodation (including apartments and rooms for rent) recorded higher values in: Constanța (5203.1 thousand), Bucharest Municipality (3623.1 thousand) and Braşov (2848.7 thousand).
By country, the most arrivals of the foreign tourists accommodated in establishments of tourists’ reception with functions of tourists’ accommodation (including apartments and rooms for rent) in 2023 came from: Germany (218.3 thousand persons), Italy (186.7 thousand persons) and Israel (150.5 thousand persons).
In 2023, the arrivals of foreign visitors to Romania, according to customs, amounted to 14777.1 thousand persons, 16.4% more compared to 2022.
In 2023, the departures of Romanian visitors abroad, according to customs, amounted to 19449.0 thousand persons, 12.6% more compared to 2022.
