Baneasa Airport to reopen to passenger traffic

Aurel Vlaicu (Baneasa) International Airport will reopen its runways for passenger aircrafts, Liviu Radu, General Director of Bucharest Airports National Company (CNAB), announced, quoted by Business Magazin.

The two International Airports in Henri Coanda (Otopeni) and Aurel Vlaicu (Baneasa) were ranked by the International Airports Council in top 5 European airports which have shown the greatest growth in air traffic throughout 2016.

Aurel Vlaicu Airport ranked third at European level, but in the category with under 5 million passengers per year, with an increase of 121.8 percent in air traffic, surpassed by: Oradea and Iasi, and followed by Bruges (Belgium) and Kharkiv (Ukraine).

Reopening Baneasa Airport is more than a possible solution, we are already working to operationalize the airport for commercial flights and charter; Baneasa terminal was enhanced and restored on the outside, being classified as a historic monument. (…) The tender for building design is under way, we hope to complete the works next year,” Liviu Radu said.

According to him, the airport operation is an objective proposed for next year too.

“We do not have any reason to doubt that 2018 we will complete this operation,” CNAB official argues.

The exact value of investments for its consolidation and restoration will be determined after awarding the modernization of the terminal on the inside; the estimate is of millions of euros.

However, CNAB has not yet established the type of airline operators that will carry out activities on this airport (traditional or low-cost), nor the exact number of passengers that could be transported. “We estimate between 1-1.5 million passengers for this airport, but is just an estimate for the moment,” Radu pointed out.

Baneasa Airport, widely considered one of the worst in Europe, was closed to civil flights in March 2012, being used just by the private jets. All of the budget airlines which landed and took off from Baneasa moved their operations to Otopeni.
