Card payments grew by almost 60 pc in Romanian online shops

The value of online payments by card in the 3D Secure system at Romanian online shops increased by 59 percent in the first three quarters of 2016 compared to the same period last year, according to RomCard data for GPeC.

At the end-September 2016, there were processed online payments worth more than EUR 434.2 million versus EUR 273.2 million processed in the first nine months of 2015.

If in 2015 there were registered 800,000 transactions on average per month, the number increased to almost 1.1 million transactions per month in the first three quarters of 2016.

In terms of consumer behavior, most transactions and the highest volume in the first nine months of both 2015 and 2016 were recorded in March of each year.

In March last year, Romanians have made over 850,000 online transactions by card, worth over EUR 35 million. The trend was maintained in 2016 as well, March being the most important month of the first three quarters of this year, when there were over 1.1 million transactions worth over EUR 54 million.

Another statistics show that in August 2016, the number of transactions has not recorded any rebound, as happened in August 2015. Even in full period of leave, the Romanians continued to transact online by card just like in a typical month the number of transactions exceeding 1.1 million, and their value exceeded EUR 47 million.

According to GPeC estimates, 2016 will end with a balance of online card transaction of about EUR 585 million using 3D Secure system.

I started my way in life with the intention to pursue a teaching career. But, after graduating from the Faculty of Letters – the University of Bucharest in 2004, my first job as a reporter at one of the leading newspapers in Romania changed my perspective. I have specialized in communication and communication campaigns, following the Master's courses at the Faculty of Journalism and Communication Studies (FJSC), attending a BBC Communications scholarship.

Affairs offices within different embassies in Romania or officials of large companies investing on the domestic market.
After almost 15 years of journalism, I still want to explore new ways, to inform and stay updated. That’s why The Romania Journal project fits me so well.
