SITA, the company specialized in air transport technology, has opened a new technology hub in Cluj-Napoca, demonstrating the city’s potential to host and support large-scale technology operations. The new hub will develop cutting-edge solutions that address the aviation industry’s most pressing challenges, such as improving passenger experiences and reducing environmental impact. This adds to Cluj-Napoca’s robust technology ecosystem and strengthens its reputation as a global technology player. The opening of SITA’s tech hub positions the city as a center for aviation technologies and invites further industry- related investments.
The Cluj-Napoca hub is part of a global network of technology hubs, connecting locations in London (United Kingdom), Letterkenny (Ireland), and New Delhi (India). SITA’s Cluj-Napoca hub employs approximately 50 people, with plans for expansion based on market dynamics.
Speaking at the inauguration, SITA CEO David Lavorel noted that the company has secured a strong team by offering quality job opportunities for software engineers, product developers, and IT specialists.
“The new technology hub in Cluj-Napoca is part of a broader strategy to decentralize operations, modernize technology development, and diversify talent. This helps us tackle industry challenges, including the need for faster technology deployment,” said David Lavorel, CEO at SITA. “Although located in Eastern Europe, the hub serves global customers and plays a vital role in transforming passenger processing solutions worldwide. Its strategic location offers better time zone alignment and proximity to growth regions, such as the Middle East and
Asia.”
In 2023, air travel surged ahead of expectations, with IATA forecasting continued growth to 8 billion global passengers by 2040. SITA’s investment in Cluj-Napoca is driving this digital transformation, as airports and airlines invest billions in IT to meet growing passenger demand.
The hub is instrumental in the creation of next-generation platforms like SITA Flex, which lets travelers check in and board using their phones, reducing wait times by up to 40% globally.
Meanwhile, SITA WorldTracer cuts lost baggage incidents by 77% while also lowering CO₂ emissions with its cloud-based system.
