Contract for Orastie – Sibiu highway was canceled. Traffic will be resumed in September

The National Company of Motorway and National Roads (CNADNR) terminates the contract signed with Italian company Salini Impregilo for the construction of Lot 3 of the Orastie-Sibiu motorway, Dan Costescu Transport Minister announced on Wednesday.

A stretch of 200 meters of this section of highway was demolished in October because there were discovered seepage under asphalt. Although the Romanian authorities announced that repairs must be covered by the constructor, Salini Impregilo, the works have not begun yet, because of disputes between the Italian contractor and CNADNR.

“A call for tenders will be launch to select a new builder to correct the deficiencies of the 200 m demolished and of the 300 extra meters with cracks on the road. If there appears no objection, the term for these works is August. That means that in the beginning or middle of September it will be able to resume traffic on the highway,” Costescu explained.

Regarding the Lugoj-Deva highway, where the same constructor, newly founded in 2014, has made Lot 2 of 28.6 kilometers, it will begin expertise. “The Italian company would come for two years on a blacklist,” the minister said.

The completion date for Orastie – Sibiu motorway is the third quarter of 2018 and the remaining investment value amounted to EUR 92.4 million, according to a document of the Ministry of European Funds (MFE).

I started my way in life with the intention to pursue a teaching career. But, after graduating from the Faculty of Letters – the University of Bucharest in 2004, my first job as a reporter at one of the leading newspapers in Romania changed my perspective. Affairs offices within different embassies in Romania or officials of large companies investing on the domestic market.
After almost 15 years of journalism, I still want to explore new ways, to inform and stay updated. That’s why The Romania Journal project fits me so well.
