Named “Daniela”, the first tunnel on the highway in Romania, is 1.3 kilometers long and undercuts the Momaia hill. The tunnel is located on the Curtea de Argeș-Tigveni section, part of the Sibiu-Pitesti highway.

The builder, an Austrian company, has 350 road workers on site with 140 machines. Because the construction site has been working regardless of the bad weather since the beginning of the year, the work started this spring has reached 18%.

The 10 kilometers between Curtea de Argeș and Tigveni should be open in 2027, and the entire Sibiu-Pitesti highway should be ready a year later.

The general director of the Road Company, Cristian Pistol, told Digi24 that the contractor is very well organized and that they are working on embankments, structures, foundations and utilities.

“The physical stage is over 18%. There are very good prospects for the completion of this highway lot ahead of schedule. The deadline is February 2027, but as it has been mobilized, I think it can be brought forward by 10-12 months. In 2028 we should travel from Sibiu to Pitesti on the highway, the connection from Nădlac to the Port of Constanța will basically be completed,” said Cristian Pistol.

The contractor works on the construction site with 360 workers and 150 machines, Ionel Scrioșteanu, secretary of state at the Ministry of Transport, wrote on Facebook. He states that the Momaia tunnel will be 1.3 km long and will consist of 2 separate main galleries, Daniela and Alina, one for each direction of travel.

The construction of the two lines of the tunnel is being worked on simultaneously, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with teams of specialists brought from Austria, together with workers from Romania, who use the new Austrian NATM method, using state-of-the-art technology, according to the secretary Oo the state.

Section 4: Tigveni – Curtea de Argeș is about 10 km long, and 13 works of art will be built on this section, including 12 bridges, passages and viaducts, the longest viaduct being 630 meters. It also includes the construction of a road junction at Țigveni, which will make the connection with Section 3 of the Sibiu – Pitesti Highway.

The Sibiu – Pitesti highway will have a length of 122 km, it is divided into 5 sections, it will connect Central and Western Romania with the European highway network, being an important part of the Pan-European Transport Corridor no. IV.
