Bernie Sanders, the Democratic candidate for President of the United States, blamed the low Internet speed in America, comparing it with Romania, in a message on Twitter, which attracted more ironic replies on the social network.

“High-speed Internet access is no longer a luxury. It’s crucial for rural America to be connected and to do business with the rest of the world,” Sanders said, adding: “Today people living in Bucharest, Romania, have access to much faster Internet than most of the US. That’s unacceptable and must change!”

Ironic reactions suggested an invasion of Romania to take its internet.

According to Ookla’s Net Index ranking, based on data collected in December 2014, Romania ranks fourth among countries with the highest speed of Internet broadband with download speed of 60.2 Mbps. On the other hand, Bucharest is the Romanian city with the highest Internet speed (80.38 Mbps), the capital ranking the 14th place out of 158 urban centers considered by Ookla.
