EUR 400 M investment in the first private airport in Romania

Romania could soon have its first private airport, an investment that amounts to 400 million euros and will be carried out on the site of the former airfield in Alexeni commune, Ialomița county.

Marian Pavel, the president of the Ialomița County Council, announced on his Facebook page the signing of the agreement that allows the start of the investment that should be completed in the next four years. 

“The first private airport in Romania is taking shape – Alexeni Airport! We have signed the concession contract for the assets in Alexeni located in the public domain of Ialomița county, for the project to develop and operationalize Alexeni Airport, a crucial investment objective for Ialomița county,” wrote the president of the Ialomița County Council. 

According to him, the consortium declared the winner is the one led by the Romanian company Avant Airports SRL, which is committed to making an investment estimated at 400 million euros, with an implementation period of 4 years.

“Alexeni Airport will become the first private airport in Romania, offering state-of-the-art infrastructure and high-quality airport services. Located just 66 kilometers from Bucharest, it will be strategically positioned to take over a significant part of the cargo and low-cost traffic, which overloads Otopeni Airport,” the local leader also announced.

The future airport will address passenger planes, but also freight transport, through the construction of a cargo hub of 20,000 square meters and a capacity of 10,000 tons per year.

The terminal will cover an area of ​​30,000 square meters, and the estimated annual capacity of the airport is 6.5 million passengers per year, about half the capacity of the Otopeni airport. The airport will have a runway that can be used even by large aircraft.
