A new bank enters Romania

The Austrians at Addiko Bank are preparing to launch operations in Romania, with the first solutions offered to consumers in the first quarter of 2025, according to Economedia. The bank had plans to attack the Romanian market since 2022.

In 2024, Addiko completed the main preparatory work for entering the Romanian market in 2025, using the cross-border license of its Slovenian subsidiary. The bank claims to be ready to launch fully digital consumer lending solutions in the first quarter of 2025.

“Addiko will leverage its current digital platform, risk management expertise and business practices for its digital launch in Romania with an initial personal loan product. Following partnership agreements with key providers for remote identification, electronic signature, credit bureau access and software collection services, the implementation phase has been launched, which is currently focused on IT integration and planning for future tests. The group plans to initiate a pilot phase in the first half of 2025 to stabilize the system and adjust its value proposition,” the bank said.

The bank does not expect the expansion into Romania to have a noticeable impact on profitability guidance before 2026.

Addiko Bank is an Austrian banking group with extensive cross-border activities in the Alps-Adriatic region. The group is active in Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro. Addiko Group, a bank specializing in the consumer and SME sectors operating in Central and South Eastern Europe (CSE), achieved a profit after tax of EUR 45.4 million for the full year 2024. The result marks an improvement of 10.4% compared to the previous year.
