New EBRD regional director for Romania, Bulgaria pays visit to Bucharest

The new European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) Regional Director for Romania and Bulgaria, Mark Davis, has arrived on Monday in Bucharest, the bank informs.

The EBRD delegation, led by Vice-president Jurgen Rigterink and by Vice-president for Banking, Alain Pilloux, has arrived in Bucharest for talks with the authorities and with the business community in Romania, regarding the investment climate, the ways to intensify the EBRD financing in Romania, as well as the infrastructure development and attracting foreign investments.

During the visit, the delegation will present Mark Davis, the new Regional Director for Romania and Bulgaria, who is to start his term on April 1, 2019. The delegation also includes Charlotte Ruhe – Director General for Central and Eastern Europe and Matteo Patrone – who has coordinated the operations in Romania and Bulgaria between 2015 and 2018, recently appointed as Regional Director for Eastern Europe and Caucasus.

The three-day visit includes meetings with Prime Minister Viorica Dancila, with Finance Minister Eugen Teodorovici and with BNR Governor Mugur Isarescu. The delegation will also discuss with the business community representatives, the release reads.

Mark Davis was appointed the neEBRD Regional Director for Romania and Bulgaria in January 2019 and will assume his new role in Bucharest on April 1, 2019.

Mr Davis was Adviser to EBRD Vice President, Banking, Alain Pilloux, based in London. He joined the Bank in 2013 as Head of Armenia. During his tenure in Yerevan, he expanded EBRD’s investment in the country, made a major contribution to the creation of the Armenian Private Equity Fund, and helped deepen local capital markets, the release further reads.

Prior to joining the EBRD, Mr Davis was an Executive Director at Goldman Sachs in Moscow (2010-2012) and Executive Director at Morgan Stanley in London (2007-2010). He began his career at the World Bank in Washington D.C. where he was a senior country economist responsible for R. of Moldova, Ukraine and Kazakhstan between 1996 and 2006. Mark Davis holds a PhD in economics from Tulane University.

To date, the EBRD has invested over EUR 8.3 billion in Romania and nearly EUR 3.9 billion in Bulgaria. In 2018 alone, the Bank invested over EUR 400 million in Romania and more than EUR 185 million in Bulgaria.
