Starting 23 September 2024, the National Bank of Romania will add to the list of exchange rates the indicative quotations of the Romanian leu against the Hong Kong dollar (HKD), the Israeli shekel (ILS), the Indonesian rupee (IDR), the Philippine peso (PHP), the Icelandic krona (ISK), the Malaysian ringgit (MYR) and the Singapore dollar (SGD).
The exchange rates will be added to the current list in the above-mentioned order, before the price of gold and the SDR and after the Thai baht.
The new currencies are introduced in the calculation of the leu quote when commercial transactions with the respective countries become relevant, BNR officials told HotNews, mentioning that there is no explicit threshold from which the volume of transactions with a certain currency obliges the NBR to include it in the list of leu quotations, but that, following daily monitoring, if it is found that for a reasonable period of time these volumes are at a high level, the BNR will also display the indicative exchange rate of the leu against them.
BNR representatives also said there is a relevance in terms of tourism.
