German retailer Kaufland, still the biggest employer in Romania

Since 2014, German hypermarket chain Kaufland tops the largest employers ranking in Romania. In 2016 too, Kaufland is considered the biggest employer on the local market, officially reporting more than 17,700 employees, according to Revisal, the software Labor Inspection Department uses to keep records of employees, informs.

“Since we entered Romania, we engaged over 1,000 people on average every year. For this year also, we aim to maintain this number, considering that we plan to open at least six new stores,” Kaufland Romania representatives stated.

OMV Petrom ranks second, with about 14,400 employees last year, with over 1,000 people fewer than the previous year.

Automobile Dacia is next, whose employees’ number on the Mioveni platform is stagnating somewhere around 14,000 people for several years.

Five of the ten largest employers locally are operating in the trade sector, most of them in the food retail (Kaufland, Profi Rom Food, Carrefour and Mega Image), as well as DIY retailer Dedeman.

Profi Rom Food ranks 4th with 11,506 employees, followed by RCS & RDS with 11,469 employees.

“Retail expansion should continue, but here is always possible a brands merger, because not all companies are doing very well. Besides retail, we believe that new hirings will be made this year in the automotive parts industry,” Raluca Parvu, business manager BPI Group noted.
