The Romanian consumer goods market recorded a 13 percent increase in the first quarter of this year, compared to the same period last year, according to Gfk study.
The largest increase is recorded on the personal care products segment for which the Romanians spent 17 percent more in the period under review. Food products (fresh and packaged) also had rises above the market average due to the increased consumption. Instead, beverages and home care products grew at a slower pace.
Compared to the previous periods, the volumes purchased in the first quarter rebounded on an upward trend (+ 7.4 percent).
“Families with children are the ones who have most intensified spending on consumer goods. Large increases were also recorded among households in large localities with over 150,000 inhabitants. From the point of view of the region, Banat-Crisana-Maramures and Oltenia had the most significant evolutions during the first quarter”, according to the GfK study.
Modern commercial units – hypermarkets, supermarkets, discount stores, proximity stores – remain the main channel for home shopping. At present, they cover 62 percent of consumer goods sales and are at the same level as in the first quarter of 2017.
